Transformative learning
Exploring the power of transformative learning and its potential for change
The vision that guides Global Action Plan’s education work is that of an education system that empowers young people to create a compassionate and sustainable society.
It’s our goal that by 2030, every child leaves school prepared to act collectively for the good of people and planet.
Our work supported by The JJ Charitable Trust explores the theme of transformative learning. This is learning that:
- Often starts with a disorientating dilemma
- Can be uncomfortable to begin with as beliefs are challenged.
- Can lead to wonderful moments, a feeling of change and realisation of new values.
We wanted to craft the story of the emerging model of transformative sustainability education, empowering advocates to tell it, and call for change at a policy level.

Transformative learning: what, why and how
As part of this work, we hosted an online discussion between Dr Morgan Phillips and Dr Noah Sobe, where they discussed transformative learning; what it is, why it matters, and how it’s done.
We also shared short video stories on our social media of transformative learning moments and how they have resonated to change lives and learning journeys for those who experienced them.
With thanks to the JJ Charitable Trust
