The challenge

Unilever has a pioneering Sustainable Living Plan which aims to halve emissions while doubling growth. The company wanted to bring the Plan to life for its 173,000 colleagues around the world, and encourage them to take action at home and at work. They decided to test out the EcoTeams model because it allows staff to choose their own actions, and helps strengthen working relationships. 

How we helped

We worked with the Unilever CSR team to identify a long list of challenges that colleagues could adapt to their own local situations, with actions like cutting waste, saving water, cutting carbon and improving workplace efficiency. 

We recruited volunteer champions in the 10 offices that could lead small  teams of colleagues in their action plans. We supported the teams with toolkits, email guidance and regular conference calls over the 4-week period.

Impact

The programme showed that employees all over the world could help Unilever deliver on its Sustainable Living Plan through EcoTeams. Colleagues came up with highly creative campaigns and enjoyed working together. EcoTeam leaders are keen to remain involved and grow the initiative by engaging more of their colleagues in the programme. 

    • 607 colleagues participated in 84 Ecoteams
    • Colleagues recorded 3,198 environmental actions
    • We awarded United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) certificates to all participating colleagues
