The challenge

To use a tailored resident engagement approach to train people in five housing associations to save water and energy.

How we helped

Local water companies provided free water-saving products, which our partner housing associations then installed. We supported residents to use the devices to reduce their bills.

We knew that the retrofitting was a good opportunity for residents to think about what else they could do in their homes to save water and energy. So we ran a prize draw where residents could win a goody bag with £50 of energy-saving products for taking part.

We also trained staff and resident environmental champions to use our EcoTeams games and activities with other community groups, spreading the message even further.

    • In the first year the partnership installed water equipment in 3,300 homes and provided water and energy-saving training for 258 staff and residents.
    • 700 people heard our water and energy-saving messages.
    • 150 residents attended small group meetings to save more energy and water.

PlugIn won the Community involvement and Engagement award at the Sustainable Housing Awards 2012. It was also a finalist in the Best Public Sector category of the CIPR PRide awards celebrating the best PR & communications campaigns from the Midlands.

"PlugIn wouldn’t have been a success if it wasn’t for the continuous support and guidance from Environment Agency, Severn Trent Water & Global Action Plan. The PlugIn Project ethos of collaborative and partnership working is embodied by all partners, staff and tenants.”
