Transform Our World is a programme of work supporting educators to empower young changemakers to take social action

Our children gained confidence, developed teamwork skills, and learned how to make a positive impact in their school community, reaching out further into the wider community.

This experience has shown how valuable youth social action can be, and I’ll definitely look for ways to embed similar opportunities in future lessons

Global Action Plan began the Transform Our World programme of work in 2019, launching on the same day as the global school strikes for climate. Young people needed youth social action opportunities on environmental issues, and Transform Our World offered that in the form of resources, events and training to educators, as well as in-school delivery.

We hosted our own climate education resources, and those from like-minded charities and NGOs who shared a focus on the climate and biodiversity crisis. We wanted to make it as simple as possible for our growing audience of climate-concerned educators to feel equipped with tools and resources to empower climate action in the classroom.

It’s our goal that by 2030 every child will leave school prepared to act for the good of people and planet, so the Transform Our World programme of work has delivered youth social action projects around the country with this aim.

Funded by #iwill Fund, with support from National Lottery Community Fund and Department for Culture, Media and Sports, our Transform Our World practitioners around the country witnessed young people grow in confidence throughout the programme and create change in their communities.

Supporting primary and secondary schools around the country to empower youth-led social action projects

Practitioners worked on in-school programme delivery, supporting primary and secondary schools around the country to empower youth-led social action projects that activate compassionate values, care for nature and biodiversity and create change in communities.

We regularly communicated with our community of educators, sharing relevant news, and opportunities for them and their students to get involved in climate action. We created the Schools Climate Action Planner, a tool used by the Let’s Go Zero campaign run by climate charity Ashden. We have also created the Youth Social Action Handbook, a resource that we have made freely available to educators to support young people taking action.

We hosted multiple online summits, led by students, which have involved influencers in the climate space and which centre discussions around for example the role of COP, what power is and practical advice on how young people can get involved in climate action and systems change.

I would like to do things like this more, as it makes me happy, as it helps the environment, also it builds and strengthens friendships, it also gives us power. I hope things like this carry on in our school and more get to feel like I do

Transform Our World is funded through the #iwill Fund, which is made possible thanks to £66 million joint investment from The National Lottery Community Fund and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to support young people to access high quality social action opportunities.

We are also grateful for support from The Ernest Cook Trust and The Garfield Weston Foundation.

We're a proud member of the award-winning Let's Go Zero coalition, co-ordinated by climate charity Ashden, which brings together non-profit organisations committed to supporting schools to take climate action.
