The change we want to see
Global Action Plan wants to see a National Curriculum that includes climate understanding, skills and values. The vision that guides Global Action Plan’s education work is that of an education system that empowers young people to create a compassionate and sustainable society.
It’s our goal that by 2030, every child leaves school prepared to act collectively for the good of people and planet.
The Curriculum and Assessment Review chaired by Professor Becky Francis offered an excellent opportunity to campaign for change, and with support from The JJ Charitable Trust, we have worked to raise awareness of the need for climate education at this crucial moment in education policy development.
We have collaborated with UCL Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Education, the Council for Subject Associations, academics and educators to come together and call for change.

What we're doing
Since the Curriculum and Assessment Review was announced in July 2024, Global Action Plan campaigned to support inclusion of climate education in the National Curriculum by:
- Writing to the Review Chair, Professor Becky Francis, asking her to ensure the climate and nature crisis were prioritised in the review.
- Publishing an open letter to the Secretary of State for Education from 150 leading climate scientists and academics, calling on the Department for Education to offer the strongest possible response to the climate and environmental crisis.
- Launching a whitepaper in collaboration with UCL Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Education - The key contributions of subjects to climate change and nature education: a curriculum policy proposal - UCL Discovery
- Hosting a webinar for academics and educators to discuss the whitepaper and what climate change and sustainability education is and does.
