Let’s let all MPs know where we stand, and together send them a powerful message: “The public backs climate action. Stand up to the lies and the lobbyists. Stay the course."
Net Zero is overwhelmingly popular in the UK and across the world - 76% of people in the UK and 72% globally support a quick transition away from fossil fuels to clean energy.[1]
But online disinformation is now one of the major threats to the climate.
Anti-climate lobbyists, the fossil fuel industry and even foreign governments are promoting deliberate disinformation campaigns intent on derailing progress. They are using social media to build a climate of fear among those with the power to accelerate progress at this crucial moment in our history. They sow the seeds of doubt with false claims that green technology doesn’t work. They manipulate local concerns and whip up scare stories for their own ends. They attack supporters of climate action and spread false stories of a great public “backlash” to scare our MPs into retreat.
Right now, those in power need a reminder of the truth - that the world has never been better equipped to tackle climate breakdown, and support for urgent action has never been higher.
During the recent UK riots, false stories were used to whip up hatred and incite violence - but far more people showed up to anti-racism demonstrations.
No social media stoked “backlash” can ever match the real support for action to protect our planet and people - as long as we all show up.
