Global Action Plan backs call for more ambitious climate change education policy
Global Action Plan, as part of the newly formed Education Climate Coalition (ECC), has signed an open letter calling for greater ambition on climate and sustainability education and action.
The letter, delivered to the Department of Education (DfE) this week, is built on ECC-led analysis of delivery against the DfE’s 2022 Sustainability and Climate Change strategy. This found that while progress has been made in three key areas, including the launch of the National Education Nature Park and the delivery of a Green Skills Conference, there has been no update at all on four of the 19 DfE pledges or commitments, and a need for more clarity on actions taken on the remaining 12.
The letter, which also includes proposals for action on the curriculum, safeguarding and buildings, asks for:

A comprehensive written update on progress towards each point in the DfE’s 2022 Sustainability and Climate Change strategy, to give teachers, young people and NGOs more information on how the strategy is being implemented

A meeting to discuss how the ECC and associated groups can work with the DfE to raise ambitions and deliver on climate and sustainability more effectively
Global Action Plan is a proud co-signatory of the letter and worked closely with the ECC to mobilise signatures from a further 17 organisations, including Friends of the Earth, Teach the Future, Let’s Go Zero, and the UCL Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Education.
