Global Action Plan and Impact on Urban Health launch awareness campaign on the dangers of wood burners

(18/01/23)

Global Action Plan and Impact on Urban Health have launched a campaign to raise awareness about the negative health and environmental impacts of wood burners.

Surprisingly, many people are still unaware of the dangers of wood burning and this campaign aims to change that. In fact, the majority of wood burning is unnecessary - almost half of all burners do so for “aesthetics” or “nostalgic” reasons and only a minority of people (8%) burn as their only source of heat. As more people struggle to pay to heat their homes through gas or electricity, the perceived “necessity” to burn may increase. It is therefore essential that the UK public is aware of the dangers. Even homes with "eco" wood burners are three times more polluted than those without.

As part of the awareness campaign, an information page has been published on the Clean Air Hub with all the up-to-date information on wood burning.

The charities also worked with Dog Cat & Mouse and JAA Media on a creative and digital channel strategy that targets Londoners who are likely to own a wood burner/ and or thinking of buying one. Using a combination of hard-hitting facts about the harms of wood burning, alongside the engaging light humour of other types of posts seen on the neighbourhood forum Nextdoor, the campaign aims to cut through and deliver this important message.
