A new vision of environmental education
Young people are finishing their education without the knowledge, skills and motivation to address the climate crisis. At the same time, the education system in England is on the brink of change and the appetite for education system reform is growing.
The environment and education sectors need to work together and push for changes to the education system that ensure it meets the needs of people and planet. By giving teachers and learners more control over what and how they teach and learn, they will be happier, will achieve better educational outcomes, and will prioritise learning about climate and nature.
A new four-part collection of think pieces – ‘Environmentalism in a time between education worlds’ – outlines the opportunity for environmental education campaigners to help shape the new education system as it emerges.
Dr Morgan Phillips, Global Action Plan’s Director of Education and Youth Engagement and author of the essays, said:
“At Global Action Plan, we are striving to nurture and mobilise a generation of young people who are prepared – both willing and able – to act collectively for the good of people and planet. These essays aim to frame the campaigning effort that is so badly needed to ensure that the new era of education facilitates, rather than hinders, environmental and sustainability education.
“We are keen to work with colleagues and activists from both the education and environmentalism worlds to engage policymakers in ways that inspire them to revolutionise the education system.”
