‘Make climate and nature crisis a core part of curriculum review’, Global Action Plan asks new Education Secretary
Today we have written to Bridget Phillipson MP, the new Secretary of State for Education to congratulate her on her appointment, and to welcome her commitment to commissioning an expert-led curriculum and assessment review.
In the letter, we call on the Secretary of State to ensure that the climate and nature crisis features prominently in the terms of reference issued to the expert who leads the review and ask whether specialists in sustainability education and environmental science will be invited to join any associated advisory groups.
We also stress the importance of gathering evidence and insights from practitioners via both a public call for evidence and through a carefully planned series school visits that give the experts a true picture of the strengths and weaknesses of current curriculum and assessment arrangements.
We look forward to working closely with the Secretary of State and her team in the coming months and years to accelerate progress already made through the Department for Education’s Sustainability and Climate Change strategy, and to ensure that the National Curriculum prepares young people to take collective action for the good of people and planet.
