Cleaner Air Action Days WHO: CROSS RIVER PARTNERSHIP AND LONDON BOROUGHS WHAT: AIR QUALITY COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT WHERE: PAN-LONDON Cleaner Air Action Days empower local people to take action in combating air pollution in their community. By letting drivers know directly that they are the key to cleaner air, residents spread the ‘no idling’ message on the ground in a positive way. The Challenge Levels of two key pollutants - particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide - are still too high across much of London so we need to drive down local air pollution to meet health based limits. Idling, leaving an engine on when the vehicle is stationary was identified as a completely avoidable source of local air pollution. But how do you convince stationary drivers to turn off their engines when it is such an ingrained behaviour? How we helped GAP designed Cleaner Air Action Days - a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of turning off engines to reduce air pollution. The days have been used on multiple occasions across London with teams of hi-vis vest wearing Air Quality Champions. On a mission to create a new social norm, they break down barriers to changing behaviour by myth-busting misconceptions about the need to idle and explaining its impact on local air quality. Keen to also recognise and reward, non-idling drivers are given congratulatory air fresheners and an information flyer. The days have proved to be a great way to demonstrate that local communities can influence drivers and improve air quality. Impact 758 DRIVERS SWITCHED THEIR ENGINE OFF AND COMMITTED TO CHANGE THEIR BEHAVIOUR LOCAL BUSINESSES SUPPORTED THE CAMPAIGN BY ASKING THEIR DRIVERS TO STOP IDLING THE DAYS HAVE SAVED AN ESTIMATED 2,550 LITRES OF FUEL THE CAMPAIGN HASHTAG #NOIDLING TRENDED, with OVER 3.6M TWITTER IMPRESSIONS I now understand that idling can contribute towards serious illness, so I will try to reduce idling in the future. Parent, Westminster What's Next? Global Action Plan have designed an engagement model that harnesses local passion to run Cleaner Air Action Days in collaboration with local authorities and businesses. We hope to work with even more organisations in the future to help evetyone breath cleaner, healthier air. Want to run a programme in your community?
