THE CHALLENGE

Southern Water asked Global Action Plan to help them to create an innovative, engaging programme for secondary students to support the communications strategy of their Universal Metering Programme.

"My favourite part of Aqua Innovation was all of it because it has given me a chance to make a difference."- Student at Angmering School, West Sussex

HOW WE HELPED

Together we designed and delivered the Aqua Innovation schools programme, a student-led programme that encourages young people to use their creativity and develop their skills to create solutions for water stress in their area.

We gave students the tools to investigate how much water their school uses and how much they use at home. Our games and activities helped them experience why water is a crucial issue in the UK and around the world.

We then supported students create water-saving product ideas and communication campaigns. From building mobile phone apps, to creating water-saving toilets, to performing a dance in the staff room – Aqua Innovation gives students ownership over every part of their experience.

IMPACT

Sutton and East Surrey Water joined the partnership in 2012, growing the number of schools we worked with from 10 to 22. In 2014, we will reach a further 18 schools with South East Water and Essex & Suffolk Water joining the partnership.

    • 5.8 million litres of water saved per year
    • 31% increase in students thinking about how water use affects the environment
    • 145,000 members students, teachers and parents reached through student campaigns and local media
    • 87% of students told friends and family about the programme

"I have seldom if ever worked on a project which has so many obvious benefits to so many individuals for so many different reasons." - Liz Thorne, Sutton and East Surrey Water
