In 1992 the first Global Action Plan offices were established in The Netherlands and the United States after the Rio Earth Summit. The summit inspired an American called David Gershon to create a new organisation that involved everyday people in creating solutions to environmental problems.
The inspiring idea of Global Action Plan spread to a number of countries and was launched in the UK by Director, Trewin Restorick. Trewin launched the first programme working with an amazing 30,000 households and supported by thousands of volunteers, who participated and received action packs that offered practical tips on ways to use energy efficiently, reduce waste, cut water use and shop ethically.
Today Trewin still directs Global Action Plan UK. We have created a framework for change that works and has in doing so helped thousands of people and organisations country wide to make substantial environmental and financial savings. Our supportive, structured approach recognises the importance of tailoring projects to the priorities and cultures of individual communities.
More offices have now opened worldwide to take up the challenge, with several countries adopting the UK programmes due to their proven high levels of success.
