Great, green success!
Great, green success!
Since 2010 we have been counting down to Christmas in a new way with our great, green advent calendar.
The great. green advent calendar challenges people to take part in a range of different actions that are fun and help to create a more sustainable festive season.
The winners
Well done to everyone who's taken part over the years so far. Over 700 actions have been completed with a grand total saving of over 30 tonnes of CO2!
2010 winners - Andy Marshall, Mary-Ellen Gallacher, Carly Brown and Kathy Marshall.
2011 winners - Ede Fyfe and Ryan Brown.
Your favourite actions
Day 1 - The easy starter: Having appliances on standby costs £800 million per year, generating an extra 4 million tonnes of CO2. Switch off and unplug.
Day 5 - Wet Christmas. You could save at least 30 litres of water by having a shower instead of a bath. Avoid using a power shower and you will save yourself an additional 40 litres!
Day 7 - Give fun not stuff. 3 million tonnes of waste is dumped during Christmas in the UK (Friends of the Earth 2007). Give an experience!
Day 13 – What to do on a Monday. If everyone in the UK participated in meat-free Mondays, we could save 12 Mtons CO2– that's saving more CO2 than taking 5 million cars off the roads! Livestock cause 20% of the world’s emissions, and cows are the biggest culprit (moo).
Save 5 tonnes CO2 each year
You can save over 5 tonnes CO2 each year just by turning the simple green advent calendar actions into habit.
