Case study: Allianz
One of the UK’s largest insurers, Allianz Insurance plc, has reduced its annual waste levels by over 153 tonnes, equivalent to the weight of more than 15 London buses.
Background
Allianz Insurance plc joined up with Global Action Plan to take part in our Environment Champions programme. The insurer has since reduced its electricity consumption and waste, saved significant costs, increased recycling and raised staff awareness across the organisation.
Why choose Environment Champions?
The Environment Champions programme is a 3 stage process that empowers employees to create environmental change within the workplace. It involves detailed audits before and after the programme and help and support throughout.
At the beginning of programmes, decreasing energy and re-using things especially in an office can seem like a colossal task, but by sheer determination and enthusiasm, staff across the Allianz offices were able to make a real impact.

Results
From Birmingham to Brentford, Glasgow to Tunbridge Wells, offices surged ahead in their carbon cutting. Allianz worked with us for over a year on communications campaigns to reduce energy consumption, and reduce office resources through actions such as double-sided printing, re-using equipment and increasing recycling bins.
Thanks to the success of the programme Allianz were a finalist in the Corporate Social Responsibility Project category at the British Insurance Awards.
Around £65,990 of annual energy costs were saved through the scheme at the regional programme sites. And at the Bristol sites alone, a reduction of 60,000 sheets of paper per year was made - reducing 1,010kg of carbon emissions.
This kind of reduction really shows what can be achieved by making small changes. Staff at Allianz have made that happen throughout all of their offices, which is an extremely impressive achievement.

By taking steps to ‘switch off’ equipment and re-use resources, the Allianz head office in Guildford reduced electricity consumption by approximately 10% (saving around £30,000) and reduced waste by an impressive 30%, preventing over 11 tonnes of harmful greenhouse gases being released from landfill.
At offices in Brentford, the number of lights left on fell to zero compared with 57% before the campaign, and in Glasgow recycling rates increased from 11% to 49%.
