Case study: Sky

Sky selected us as their charity partner from 170 applicants.

In January 2008, we started a three-year partnership to fight climate change by transforming people’s understanding of environmental issues and inspiring behaviour change with a wide range of their stakeholders.

Schools campaign

We created Appetite for Action for Sky, which is a food-focused programme for primary schools. Over 1,400 schools have signed up over the past two years.

We have acheived national media coverage on BBC News and the Financial Times newpaper and international media coverage in the NewYork Times.

This year, our top Reduce Rubbish School has reduced their schools waste by 80%, diverting over 3.4 tonnes of waste from landfill a year and saving 10 tonnes of CO2 as a result.

Local communities

Sky have a strong presence in Scotland so we developed EverGreen Scotland to benefit residents of a local housing association with over 5,000 residents.

We work with management and residents in the schemes to implement changes and empower residents across Dunfermline and Livingston to make their housing more sustainable.

EverGreen also provides large-scale environmental volunteering opportunities for Sky and the local community.

Supply chain

It is important for businesses to manage the environmental impacts of their suppliers.  We have helped Sky do this through:

  • Training and workshops with key suppliers.
  • Applying our experience with smaller businesses including employee engagement.
  • Introducing the Carbon Copies programme, which has been adapted by businesses in the community to help them achieve their supply chain management and sustainability commitments.

Employees

Our involvement with the Sky Leadership programme continues with 50 leaders from across Sky helping not only to develop initiatives that work in harmony with our existing projects, but also help us to develop our offerings.

We have developed a bespoke, yearlong volunteering programme for Sky staff. The programme trains and supports staff to make environmental changes, internally with staff and buildings, and externally with the local community.

The programme links directly into environment policy with Sky's Executive Steering Group receiving quarterly presentations from the Sky Eco Champions.

We also developed the Sky Leadership Development Programme (SLDP), which trains the top future talent of Sky on a yearlong development programme. We worked together to develop a two-way process for staff from both organisations.

We provided project group work to 50 senior Sky leaders, designed to provide insight into different working environments and the challenges faced by different sectors helping Sky to develop leadership skills and to gain a better understanding of their customers.

The future

The partnership will continue beyond 2011, reflecting the value seen in bringing partners with shared aims and different strengths together while enabling us to explore new ground using our tried and tested methods to extend our reach by working with customers, employees and communities.
