Case Study: Water Makeover for North Harringay Primary School
Students at North Harringay Primary School doing a water audit.
North Harringay Primary School achieves great water, money and carbon savings.
North Harringay Primary School’s Water Makeover Action Team is made up of 16 enthusiastic and motivated students from key stage two. Lead by teacher Kate Savage, the team completed the Thames Water Makeover project in March 2011.
What is Thames Schools Water Makeover project?
The Thames Water Makeover project helps schools reduce their water consumption and save money. The programme raises water saving awareness in schools and empowers students and staff to take actions that reduce both their water use and greenhouse gas emissions.
North Harringay's Action Team
The Action Team was extremely effective in spreading the water saving message throughout the school.
They carried out a survey to find out where people were wasting water, and created an action plan to address the wastage. They made posters and short advertising sketches to help people think about how they could save water.
The team then went onto share these actions with the rest of the school through an assembly and in a newsletter to parents.
We all worked really hard to change our behaviour so we can save water. This work really opened children’s eyes to the importance of saving water and how they could take some simple steps to reducing the amount of water they use. They are certainly more aware of the importance of water. Kate Savage, Assistant Headteacher.
Great results
Following the Action Team’s participation in the Thames Water Makeover project the staff and students successfully reduced their
• water consumption by over 152,000 litres and
• greenhouse gas emissions by 160kg
Excellent stuff, North Harringay Primary School -- keep up the great work!
