Case study: Kitley House Hotel & Restaurant

 

The Kitley House Hotel & Restaurant is a 500 year old historic country house hotel. Set in the heart of the South Devon countryside, the hotel is positioned within 600 acres of unspoilt pasture and woodland.

Background

The current business was established in 1999. It has a turnover of £1.2 million and employs 30 staff.

In addition to the cost savings made possible by making environmental changes, there is a growing awareness that discerning customers take into consideration the low environmental impact of a business.

Global Action Plan carried out a detailed environmental audit for Kitley House and offered advice on a range of legal and environmental issues.

Key savings and achievements

  • A total of £13,000 a year saved through new environmental management actions
  • Reduced annual CO2 emissions by 115 tonnes
  • Recycling scheme diverts 260 tonnes a year from landfill, saving £4,000
  • £600 a year saved on heating costs (10% reduction) with new heating controls and thermostats and conversion from gas to electricity
  • £2,000 a year saved after fitting water pressure reducing valves
  • £2,000 a year saved by shifting to environmentally-friendly cleaning products
  • More customers attracted by wildlife areas and “green” credentials
  • Silver award achieved from South Hams Green Business Tourism Scheme
  • £25,000 reduction in capital costs through improved water management

How did Global Action Plan help Kitley House achieve this?

Following a detailed environmental audit, we offered advice on a range of legal and environmental issues, wildlife enhancement, reduction of waste and water use, energy efficiency measures and transport plans.

We also gave support with loan applications, background research and networking contacts to source technical environmental services .

Opportunities for future development

We also identified a range of opportunities for future development:

  • Working towards recognised national environmental standards (Environmental Management System BS8555) to further reduce costs and environmental impact
  • Installing renewable energy systems on site
  • Replacement of light fittings where appropriate to save energy
