Greenprint’s Adam saved more than 10% at college
Adam Yasir, Green Hope Campaign
Greenprint 2020 volunteer Adam Yasir started The Great Green Hope campaign at Croydon College to cut carbon and help the environment. Find out how he won support from staff and his fellow students.
Adam, 19, was inspired by his Greenprint (formerly Climate Squad) training to start his own EcoTeam. But once he got back to college, he realised that there was loads he could do right there with his friends and classmates.
He got together with 8 other students to run The Green Hope Campaign, all with the support of Climate Squad. The team adopted the slogan: "Tomorrow’s climate is today’s challenge", reinforcing their message that now is the time to tackle climate change. Adam’s hard work and campaigning encouraged over 13,000 Croydon college students to get involved.
How to cut carbon at college
They approached cutting carbon in a variety of ways, initially by raising awareness of the changes students can easily make. These changes included getting new recycling bins, engaging with staff and getting them on board, and creating IT policies so computers and monitors are only switched on when they’re being used – saving energy, money & carbon!
Adam and the Green Hope Campaign also did research into people’s knowledge and attitudes towards carbon cutting to back up the need for the campaign.
Bringing young people together
Climate Squad’s training and ongoing support gave Adam the confidence and motivation to bring together a group of diverse young people to share skills, ideas and passions to achieve more than they’d dreamed of in terms of actual carbon saved, engaging college staff and students and personal empowerment.
Adam has been selected as an outstanding role model for the campaign and awarded Citizenship Champion Status by the college.
Adam said: “We come from diverse backgrounds, and have individual skills. But we are all united under one aim, which is to make Croydon College “Go Green”.
“With hope and the commitments that we have made to ourselves, we will one day transform this College into a Greener College.”
Third Sector Volunteer of the Year Award
Global Action Plan are proud to announce that Adam has been nominated for the Third Sector Excellence Volunteer of the Year Award 2011. The nomination is in recognition of the effort he has put in to the Green Hope Campaign and ongoing support for the college and his peers. The award ceremony is taking place at the end of September 2011 where the winner will be announced. I'm sure you will join us in wishing Adam luck!
